Healing Steps Forward Virtual Vigil

A vigil to honor and remember all those impacted by COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, many people have experienced anxiety, loss, grief and trauma. This vigil is a chance for Bronson’s staff and our communities to come together to grieve, provide support and move forward on a path to healing. The live virtual vigil took place on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. We invite you to watch a recording of the event and light a candle.

For all my patients and families.. over the last 2 years. I yelled at them to keep their oxygen on..I pounded on the door to remind them to keep it on.. I begged them to eat or drink something..but they could not taste food..I gave them baths twice a day some days because they were to weak to make it to the bathroom alone. I set up video chats with their families and was tearing up every time.. So many I have seen and remember.. So many said “I will do anything you tell me to do “..They did.. and lost the battle. One of my patients said “ I am scared” I told him.. I am scared for you.. young and healthy..He lost his battle.. So many that my heart hurts every day.. Thank you Bronson for this…I have never seen this much pain or the loss of so many in my 30 + years.. Thank you so much.. Stay strong .. Love and hugs ❤️

This goes to Bronson Nurses – Courtney and Sarah. They were so compassionate and caring to Jay. After Jay passed away from COVID, Courtney spent some quiet, selfless time with me. To show the high level of considerate people at Bronson, Courtney followed up with me one year later on Jay’s passing on February 14, 2021.
I will never forget this level of kindness.

My daughter is an exhausted health care worker too – I’ve seen her tired, sad eyes, her face red and lined from long hours with an N95 and felt her dismay and disbelief about how her fellow doctors and nurses are treated. We see you all. Please know that. And know how thankful we are for your skill, your courage, and your grace in the face of one of this country’s darkest times. You are our bravest and best.

For those who have lost loved ones, I wish for you peace. For those of you who have had to stand by and do your best to treat those who are ill, I wish for your continued strength. For all of us, I wish love and patience to get through these difficult times.

To all my friends I left behind, please know I see you. Your selflessness, the grief, your compassion, your strength… When you refuse to leave the side of someone about to pass alone. When you utilize all of your knowledge and skills to try to fight for survival. When you support one another through the trauma of this pandemic. When you take the time to speak with families, and set up facetime visits for loved ones – even when you don’t have a spare minute. We’ve been through it all and not a day goes by that I don’t think of you. I am honored to have worked by your side.

My brother Trevor was in MICU for 20 day last July. In those 20 days he had an amazing team of nurses inside and a group of supporters outside. My grandpa and the nurses were the only ones allowed to see him, and together they found comfort in each others company and prayers. He only had a short 27 years here on earth but he lived them to the fullest. Not a day goes by that we don’t think of you. Forever in our hearts and always on our mind. Everyone loves Trevor.

I light this candle for Joe Medema. He was a classmate. A fellow Schoolcraft Eagle, Class of 1998. He played football and he wrestled with my husband. He was a co-worker at my Mom and Dad’s convenience store back in the day. But most of all, he was a friend. We had lost touch over the years, as this tends to happen after high school, college, getting married, and having kids. But that doesn’t mean it hurt any less. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Valerie, his beautiful little girls, and his family. Such a devastating loss for all who knew him.

For 17 days last July, in room 434 Bronson ICU, I had the honor of holding my grandson’s hand, praying with him, reading scriptures with him, meeting his amazing healthcare providers. Nurses, doctors, and other folks with titles I cannot pronounce would come and go. They would see us praying and many times pray with us. Names like Marriam, Jim, Jen, Darcey, and countless others. The ICU health care providers are comforters, healers, and Angels.

I light this Candle for the hardworking, resilient BBC GMU team. Since the beginning of the pandemic BBC GMU has cared for most of the Covid-19 positive inpatient population. Each day presented challenges and exhibited struggles; however, the team stood together, displaying strength, commitment, and perseverance. We have been collective witnesses to the Covid Pandemic
Oh, how we long to say, “this too has passed”
We are hard pressed on every side
Oh, but we are not crushed
We cry today while remembering that we said yesterday was the last time we would cry
Oh, dear warriors these tears of strength are an expression of our humanity
We are weary
Oh, how long before we can rest?
We grope in the darkness and persevere before the light of dawn comes
Because we know there is something just over the horizon
May what we find over the horizon light our path
May what we find over the horizon be a balm for our broken bodies and hearts
May what we find over the horizon help us to live in the different—never to be the new normal
We have been collective witnesses to tragedy, suffering and also hope
The light of hope that does not disappoint
